James Halliday Wine Companion 2008
Rated five stars since 2005. Kooyong and Port Phillip Estate owned by Giorgio and Dianne Gjergja, released their first wines in 2001. The Kooyong vineyard is planted to 34-ha of pinot noir and chardonnay. The Port Phillip is planted to 8.7-ha of pinot noir and chardonnay.
If there’s been one winemaker’s name on the wine media lips this year, it’s Sandro Mosele. The Kooyong, and the highly respected Port Phillip Estate winemaker, has been called ‘highly sensitive’, a ‘genius’ and a ‘sympathetic winemaker’ by the likes of Australia’s leading wine writers including Sally Gudgeon, Tyson Stelzer and Philip White. The man behind the wines is a genetics graduate, who spent the early part of his career studying koalas. Sandro turned to farm management, which led him to vineyards and the rest, as they say, is history. He studied oenology at CSU and was appointed winemaker at Kooyong in 1995. WINE BUSINESS MONTHLY, Dec 07 / Jan 08 edition.
We have chosen Kooyong Estate and Port Phillip Estate as they produce some of the most interesting Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and other cool climate varietals in Australia.
