James Halliday Wine Companion 2008
The key to the excellence of Coonawarra wines is their intense fruit character and great balance. This combination produces seductive and enjoyable young wines, which develop over time into wines of amazing complexity.
Coonawarra’s reputation was initially founded on Shiraz based wines, however since the 1950’s, Cabernet Sauvignon has evolved to become the region’s pre-eminent variety.
Punters Corner produces classic Coonawarra wines – they are truly Landmark wines of Australia.
Originally established in 1975 as James Haselgrove, the Punters Corner vineyard was acquired in 1992 by a group of investors with realistic expectations about the uncertainties of viticulture and wine making, even in a district as distinguished as Coonawarra. Today, with Pete Balnaves (of Balnaves of Coonawarra) managing the vineyards and Pete Bissel (of Balnaves) making the wines, Punters Corner seek to achieve the highest standard of viticulture and winemaking techniques. Sophisticated packaging and label design add to the appeal of the wines.
Punters Corner wines are classically Australian in style and represent the best grapes available from own vineyards in any year. The crowning glory for Punters Corner has been winning the 2000 Jimmy Watson Trophy with the 1999 Spartacus Reserve Shiraz. This trophy, awarded for the most outstanding one-year-old red wine is certainly one of the most sought after wine awards in Australia.
